So You've Booked Your First Puppy Yoga Class — Here's What to Expect
Congratulations! You've done something wonderful for your mind, your body, and your soul. Puppy yoga is one of those experiences that sounds almost too good to be true — yoga, but with puppies — and yet it somehow exceeds every expectation.
If you're a first-timer, you might be wondering what actually happens in a puppy yoga class. We've got you covered.
What Is Puppy Yoga?
Puppy yoga is exactly what it sounds like: a guided yoga class where socialized, playful puppies roam freely around the room. They'll climb on your mat, curl up beside you during savasana, and generally make it impossible to take yourself too seriously. That's kind of the point.
The combination of yoga's proven stress-reducing benefits with the mood-boosting power of animal-assisted therapy creates something genuinely special. Studies show that interacting with dogs lowers cortisol levels and boosts oxytocin — the "feel good" hormone. Add a gentle yoga flow to that, and you've got a recipe for one of the best hours of your week.
Do I Need Yoga Experience?
Absolutely not. Our classes are beginner-friendly and designed for all levels. Whether you've been practicing yoga for years or have never set foot on a mat, you'll feel right at home. Our instructors guide you through every pose, and honestly, the puppies have a way of making everyone feel relaxed and welcome.
What Should I Wear?
Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing you don't mind getting a little furry. Puppies don't discriminate — your favourite leggings may come home with some new friends on them. We'd recommend leaving your best athleisure at home for this one.
What Happens During the Class?
Here's a rough idea of how a typical session flows:
- Arrival: Show up a few minutes early to get settled, roll out your mat, and meet the puppies before class begins.
- The yoga flow: Your instructor will lead you through a gentle, beginner-friendly sequence. Expect lots of stretching, breathing, and mindful movement.
- Puppy time: Throughout the class, puppies roam freely. Some will wander over mid-pose. Some will fall asleep on your mat. All of it is wonderful.
- Savasana: The final resting pose is, without question, the best savasana you will ever experience. Puppies have a sixth sense for this moment.
What Should I Bring?
- A yoga mat (or use one of ours)
- A water bottle
- An open heart and a willingness to laugh
